How to transform a 130-year old bank into a design-led organization?
Imagine that you’re challenged to evolve the development line of 70% of a design team, in a context where the organization is thinking about new technologies and a strong economic recession. In this talk, Cinthy and Arturo will tell the story of the pains and opportunities that they went through as a team and how this led them to build what would be the roadmap for their talent strategy for the coming years, aiming at building a design-led bank that will help ensure a sustainable future.

Pluriversal Futures
Pluriversal Futures
There is the Zapatist saying that goes “un mundo donde quepan muchos mundos” (Spanish for “a world that fits many worlds”): how can we create our digital, virtual, and real-world where all worlds, all peoples, and all beings fit in? It all starts with (the decolonization of) our worldviews, our values and beliefs.

A New Renaissance for Latin America: Notes on Design and the Future
A New Renaissance for Latin America: Notes on Design and the Future
The world feels more than slightly overwhelming lately. It is unsurprising that design, or the design industry, are going through an existential crisis when the world is going through several crises at the same time. But a crisis seems as good a time as any to challenge a few things and start over. Just as the Black Death led the way for a cultural and philosophical Renaissance in Europe, so can our recent pandemic become the springboard for us to think about new, different, hopefully better futures: perhaps even a New Renaissance anchored in Latin America. As we work our way through democratic burnout, intelligent machines, and a climate emergency, it feels relevant to ask what design can offer in response to such a volatile outlook. Sure, design is not the solution to every problem — but if there was ever a need for a creative process best suited to address radically uncertain and complex problems, that’s probably now. So what could a New Renaissance look like for Latin America? And how can we build on design to help us make it happen?

AI and UX: Designing an Ethically Aware Future
AI and UX: Designing an Ethically Aware Future
Services and products can shape our behavior, beliefs and values; and can even be used to manipulate or exploit people or their circumstances. As designers, we know that it is crucial to design taking into account ethical considerations to prevent our work from contributing to generating negative impacts on society – even unintentionally – whether it may be on political scenarios or supporting social, racial or gender inequality. With this talk, we will explore the fusion between Artificial Intelligence and User Experience, redefining how to create digital interfaces powered by this technology, but from a responsible perspective. Let’s join Carolina, Fernanda and Pamela to understand how ethics in AI and UX design shape our future, and what are the keys BBK+2Brains applies to guarantee that the interfaces we create as designers, really contribute to building an inclusive and diverse future.

Somehow, User-centric Design is Failing
Somehow, User-centric Design is Failing
The last two decades have meant a qualitative leap in the creation of technology that has changed our lives together with the understanding that has created unwanted effects affecting us as individuals and as a collective. In addition to that, this period ends with two years of an industry struggling to leave behind a deep crisis, layoffs, and find a new path. Altogether it is perfect timing for designers to make a deep reflection about what’s needed for us before moving forward in the next twenty years. Join Aitor on a walk to get some insights into how designers can adapt to play a main role in companies to create more impactful, positive, balanced, and meaningful products and services for their customers.

Strategic Design with Design Fiction
Strategic Design with Design Fiction
In this talk, we will explore the field of Design Fiction as a powerful tool for designing futures. By combining the creativity of design with the narrative of science fiction, Design Fiction allows us to imagine and explore possible, desirable and sometimes uncertain futures. We will dive into how this methodology not only anticipates future technologies and trends, but also raises critical questions about the ethical, social and cultural implications of these innovations. Through practical examples and case studies, we will see how Design Fiction has been used in various sectors, from technology and architecture to politics and health, to create provocative and thoughtful visions of the future. The talk will also offer a step-by-step guide on how to implement Design Fiction in your own projects, including techniques for generating ideas, building narratives, and visualizing future concepts. Additionally, we will discuss how this approach can foster interdisciplinary collaboration and open innovation.

The words behind our origin
The words behind our origin
In LatinAmerica, where food has so deeply shaped our identity, words serve as ingredients to cook identity discourse, belonging and pride. These cultural expressions inspire us, and at the same time, can be useful to develop and progress. Brands communicate verbally, visually, and experientially. Every one of those languages is equally important; and to achieve powerful identities, brands need a clear personality, tone of voice, defined topics and main messages. It is through words that concepts become visual solutions and through messages that brands communicate with their audience, how they truly connect and become lovemarks.

Lessons Learned so Far
Lessons Learned so Far
The digital world is changing so fast that it’s almost impossible to keep up. It’s overwhelming and it feels like you would need to spend a couple of hours daily just reading the news to know what’s going on. Every day brings a new clickbait headline saying that “this technology” or “that product” will change the industry and take your job. Some of those articles are pretty close to the truth because things like generative AI are already changing the game, and soon, they will make some specializations obsolete or redundant. But have no fear, because the history of progress shows that every change brings opportunity, and every major technology breakthrough creates more jobs than it obliterates. My talk will focus on exploring the near future and describing the areas where I see a big need for designers now and in years to come. There are many places and industries where AI and automation won’t replace designers for some time. I’m going to share my story and experiences and tell you: – why it’s good to be a specialist, and how a domain specialization (or industry focus) can be your superpower – why knowledge about no-code tools and understanding front-end (and sometimes back-end) is becoming a must for product designers – how to approach innovation with a good mindset (why you shouldn’t be afraid of the change) – why it’s good to be an early adopter and why it’s always worth to jump on a hype-train – why designer skills are a good foundation for launching your own startup

Depatriarchize design for social and planetary restoration. Female and dissident voices in Latin American design
Depatriarchize design for social and planetary restoration. Female and dissident voices in Latin American design
Despite the progress made by women, the lgbtqia+ community and the dissident voices conquering spaces within the design industry, the decision-making tables remain predominantly white and male-dominated. This disparity results in only a partial narrative being told, and it is from this vantage point that Diseña Colectiva emerges as a platform that embarks on fresh, diverse avenues in design rooted in collectivity. Their aim is to construct spaces of resistance, care and expression seeking other forms of design. In this talk, Andrea and Taina will invite us to look at design through a different lens, one that reflects diverse experiences and challenges the status quo. While navigating us through a system map showcasing how they have weaved a community over the last three years, they will share how collective and multidisciplinary design can make a positive impact on society, the planet, and our communities.

The three crises of Artificial Intelligence. What role did behavioral sciences play in the design of new technologies?
The three crises of Artificial Intelligence. What role did behavioral sciences play in the design of new technologies?
In recent years, Artificial Intelligence has moved from the pages of science fiction books to newspaper articles. Every day, we wake up with new discoveries that expand the boundaries of what we thought possible. Technology provides us with great opportunities, but it also poses intricate challenges that touch upon fundamental aspects of our humanity. The media has alerted us of two crises linked to new technologies. We’re warned about the existential crisis and the labor crisis, but they have paid much less attention to the humanist crisis and its impact, which takes form in a vague anxiety, we all are beginning to feel firsthand. The emergence of artificial intelligence will have an enormous impact on the anthropological, philosophical and social conception that we have of ourselves. Human beings have always defined ourselves by what we do. We are our professions and our artistic creations. As artificial intelligences occupy more spaces in the labor market and in the field of leisure and culture, what will happen to our identity? Who will we be and what kind of life will we be able to build? The existential crisis requires a rigorous technical approach; the labor crisis will need a political approach to keep the different social agents in mind; and humanistic crisis, will require that design practitioners incorporate the wisdom of human and behavioral sciences to develop new tools.

Design for the Post-Colonial: Integrating Emotional and Cultural Aspects into Contemporary Design Practice
Design for the Post-Colonial: Integrating Emotional and Cultural Aspects into Contemporary Design Practice
In contemporary design practice, there is often a heavy reliance on rational, Cartesian methods, emphasizing functionality while neglecting the profound emotional and cultural depths. This approach overlooks what are termed as “post-colonial needs,” underscoring the urgency to integrate perspectives and approaches that have been marginalized or underestimated in the traditional design narrative. In this talk, José de la O will present a series of case studies from his academic and professional journey that illuminate this concept. These examples will encompass a diverse range from research projects and interaction design to product design, all contextualized within his doctoral research. These cases will not only propose alternatives to conventional design methodologies but also provoke other designers to critically reassess and expand their own practices. José’s presentation aims to inspire a more inclusive and comprehensive approach to design, where emotional and cultural dimensions are considered crucial to crafting impactful and meaningful designs.

Design as a link to the future: Navigating a storm (?) of uncertainty
Have you wondered if Design Thinking is losing its shine? We believe that, on the contrary, it is being reborn. Over the years, it has made organizations worldwide re-think, question and improve the way they do things, which continues to contribute to promoting a culture of collaboration and innovation in our teams. Even more so in our current apocalyptic context: layoffs, political and environmental crises, and the arrival of new technologies. In this practical workshop with the 2 Ale’s, we will: – Team up to explore how our role as designers influences our leadership and the demands of the business – We will present 2 real situations so that you can question, in a safe space, your actions and skills as designers facing the future By the end of the workshop, you will have developed and reflected on key skills (such as empathetic emotional intelligence, the ability to trust, transparent and assertive communication, and having a future focus) that you must have to successfully function in a senior role, and start to be a radical optimist in your organization. Action, reflection and execution. Who can stop you after this transformative experience?

Preferable Worlds: Design and Alternative Futures
Preferable Worlds: Design and Alternative Futures
To say that we are living a key moment in the history of humanity is no longer an exaggeration. A pandemic that doesn’t seem to have completely gone away, unprecedented levels of inequality, a crisis of democratic systems around the world, the dizzying explosion of Artificial Intelligence, and the already very present effects of climate change. If human history was a television series, we would be on a real cliffhanger: what happens in the next decades will decide what happens in the next centuries and beyond. This critical moment comes precisely when design is recognized as a key profession to generate value and, therefore, as an ideal practice to take the reins of change and thus turn this crisis into a transition towards preferable futures. James Dator’s “four generic images of the future” are a well-established framework in the field of futures (and particularly useful for exploring broad, long-term themes) that, quite presciently, map current discussions about possible futures and preferable for the remainder of this century. In this talk, Jorge Camacho will present the basic concepts of this framework to explore how design could contribute and adapt to each of these alternative futures. He will inspire us to imagine ourselves as designers in any of those alternative futures.

Human Spatial Computing and the road to Inclusion
Human Spatial Computing and the road to Inclusion
Our relationship with technology has advanced significantly, from using large mainframe computers to wearing small, portable devices that enhance our daily lives. Today, the focus is on Human Spatial Computing, which involves interacting with technology using our entire body instead of just keyboards and mice. This shift has led to the development of immersive technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), which require designing experiences that cater to human needs rather than just machines. Human Spatial Computing is a field that has the potential to transform many areas, from healthcare to remote work. However, it’s crucial to prioritize inclusivity and accessibility while developing these technologies. This talk will emphasize the significance of creating groundbreaking solutions that cater to the needs of this new era by highlighting examples of current tools and ongoing research in spatial computing.
